Community Faculty

Volunteer clinical faculty members are creating a legacy of commitment and service that will impact the health of our region for years to come. Many opportunities exist to help educate our students throughout northeastern and central Pennsylvania and we encourage you to contact our team and become part of our faculty. We support the volunteer faculty with a range of educational development programs that assure both you and your students an excellent experience.

There are many options to volunteer as a faculty member – they range from just a few hours a year as a clinical educator, offering clinical insight to lectures, to a more extensive commitment as a clinical preceptor or continuity mentor to be a role model and support for these young students during their medical education.

The faculty and staff of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine believe in and practice a community-based model of medicine. That’s why we’ve developed regional campuses throughout northeastern Pennsylvania headquartered in Wilkes-Barre, Scranton, Danville and Sayre. We are recruiting talented students who have a focus in community-based care and are dedicated to service and lifelong learning.

At Geisinger Commonwealth, we have a unique approach to medical education with an innovative and integrated curriculum. We initiate clinical experiences from the very beginning of student’s education so that students understand medicine from the patient perspective. This innovative approach allows opportunities for a clinical preceptor and/or continuity mentor to offer a clinical setting for a few hours during community experience weeks in years one and two. These interactions allow students to experience medicine first hand with instruction from a practicing physician. In addition to building physician relationships, students also build patient relationships as they follow their Family-centered Experience program. Students follow the family through the first two years of education in order to really understand the intricacies and patient challenges of the healthcare system.

Volunteer clinical faculty is essential to the success of Geisinger Commonwealth. To date, we’ve partnered with more than 1,200 community-based physicians who are helping to mold doctors and health professionals of the future. Contact us if you practice medicine in our service area and want to learn more about becoming a volunteer clinical faculty.
