Educator Faculty in the Department of Basic Sciences

The Department of Basic Sciences at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (Geisinger Commonwealth) is seeking individuals to fill an educator faculty position at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level. Successful candidates will demonstrate scholarly activity and a record of medical and graduate education in pharmacology or pathology. This is an excellent opportunity for those individuals who have had successful research careers and are now interested in directing their energy toward teaching and learning, and scholarship therewith. It also is an excellent opportunity for candidates looking for their first educator position. We have a cadre of educators with years of experience to mentor both. The Department of Basic Sciences and Geisinger Commonwealth recognizes outstanding teaching and innovative medical education scholarship as basis for advancement including tenure.

Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to work with an interdisciplinary team of educators from other basic science disciplines, as well as clinical faculty, to develop, implement, and evaluate an innovative and integrated biomedical education curriculum, and disseminate scholarship in medical education. Faculty members are expected to participate broadly across the curricula in both the medical and graduate programs, and engage in scholarly research in areas of biomedical science, medical education, or community-oriented research. Additional duties include course administration and contributions to institutional/departmental governance and service.

Academic Rank/Salary: The successful candidate will hold an academic appointment in the Department of Basic Sciences. Rank is dependent upon applicant’s qualifications but may be at the level of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor.

Qualifications: All applicants must have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree at the time of appointment. Preference will be given to those with experience in teaching in one of the aforementioned disciplines, and medical education and course administration. Evidence of biomedical or education research productivity is desired.

Clinician Educator – Psychiatry
Department of Clinical Sciences (DCS)

Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (Geisinger Commonwealth) is seeking two full-time academic faculty members in Psychiatry.  These positions are responsible for providing patient care, resident supervision, teaching, and curriculum development in the area of specialty. Appointments will be at academic ranks appropriate to the credentials.

These faculty members will be responsible for patient care, supervision of residents and educational leadership.  Responsibilities also include assisting in planning and participating in core and ancillary clinical education activities and serving as an advisor to residents and medical students. Approval for all assigned activities will be through the chair of the Department of Clinical Sciences at Geisinger Commonwealth.

Specific responsibilities for both positions include:

  • Teaching responsibilities (50% effort) in the MD curriculum, the certificate program in behavioral health for primary care physicians, and potentially other programs to be developed;
    • Administrative responsibilities as the Assistant Chair for Psychiatry Education or Director for the Mind block in the MD2 year curriculum and curriculum development for the certificate program in Behavioral Health.
    • Serving as a 3rd year psychiatry clerkship preceptor as needed
  • Psychiatry residency and patient care responsibilities (40% effort), providing patient care at a clinical site of residency training, supervising residents in that clinical setting, and providing administrative support as appropriate.
  • Community Service (10%) includes participating in Geisinger Commonwealth’s Behavioral Health Initiative and engaging with community partners in the BHI (or other strategic initiative) as deemed appropriate by the Vice Dean and Academic Department Chair in coordination with the BHI Executive Director and related workgroups or task force.

A Clinical Terminal Degree, such as MD, DO, MBBS is required, along with board certification in Psychiatry.

Clinical Skills Facilitator in the Department of Clinical Sciences (DCS)

This position is responsible for providing direct teaching, instruction and facilitation for student development of clinical skills to include communication and/or physical exam skills for general clinical education.

This position is a temporary, part-time, per session (sessional) position.  Pay is per session with encouragement to complete cycle within an academic year.

This position is required to conduct business in a professional and cordial manner that will uphold the integrity and reputation of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (Geisinger Commonwealth). This position maintains a thorough working knowledge of and adheres to the policies, regulations, and procedures of Geisinger Commonwealth.

The Clinical Skills Facilitator is responsible for the following essential functions/responsibilities:

  1. Serve as clinical faculty member for set clinical skills sessions
  2. Serve as small group facilitator and clinical skills teacher in pre-clinical skills development courses
  3. Prepare to assist students with their acquisition of clinical skills using on-line educational and curriculum resources
  4. Attend required faculty development sessions and trainings related to clinical skills session

QUALIFICATIONS

  • An engaged and respected clinician
  • Excellent inter-professional skills; attention to detail; time and ability to monitor Geisinger Commonwealth email communications in a timely fashion; ability to execute responsibilities of the job; demonstrate commitment to teaching Geisinger Commonwealth M1 and/or M2 students
  • Commitment to make all sessions in training period (either communication or physical exam sessions)

This position is responsible for serving as a small group facilitator and member of the faculty team for the Case Based Learning II (CBL 2) Course in MD2.  This positon provides direct teaching, instruction, facilitation, assessment, and evaluation for student development.

This position is a temporary, part-time (0.10 FTE), per semester position.  Pay is per semester with encouragement to complete cycle within an academic year.

This position is required to conduct business in a professional and cordial manner that will uphold the integrity and reputation of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (Geisinger Commonwealth). This position maintains a thorough working knowledge of and adheres to the policies, regulations, and procedures of Geisinger Commonwealth.

The Case Based Learning II (CBL 2) Small Group Facilitator (Assistant Professor, FM) is responsible for the following essential functions/responsibilities:

  1. Serve as small group facilitator, Case-Based Learning II (CBL II) Course for M2 in the fall and spring semesters, according to the schedule and assignments provided by the CBL II Course Director
  2. Participate in related faculty development
  3. Meet with each individual student in your small group to provide feedback four (4) times during the academic year
  4. Write narrative assessment for each individual student in group at the end of fall semester
  5. Write narrative assessment for each individual student in group at the end of spring semester
  6. Perform other duties as assigned
  7. Attend required faculty development sessions, meetings, and trainings related to small group sessions

QUALIFICATIONS

  • An engaged and respected clinician
