Geisinger Commonwealth emerged out of a grassroots movement, and the vision of our founders, to improve the quality of life in northeastern and north central Pennsylvania. The grounding of a medical education, research and service organization into 17 counties begins with a commitment to community care and wellbeing. As the 141st medical school in the United States and the first established in Pennsylvania since 1967, Geisinger Commonwealth is a regionally specific, innovative trailblazer for curricular and service engagement with national relevance and application. Distinct among all medical schools, Geisinger Commonwealth was the first allopathic medical college to engage every one of our medical students in an integrated longitudinal clerkship, within our communities, via 1000 volunteer clinical faculty.
