2017-2018 Scholarships and Awards Annual Scholarships Angelina Fricchione Cupple and Michael Cupple Scholarship is provided through an endowment at the Scranton Area Foundation and is awarded to MD students who are residents of Lackawanna County and plan to pursue primary care medicine. Commonwealth Health Future Physician’s Scholarship is awarded to students from the MD1 class who reside in Lackawanna, Luzerne, Wyoming or Columbia counties and who will conduct their Community Health Research Project (CHRP) and/or Quality Improvement Community Collaborative Project (QuICC) in the same counties with recipients presenting their CHRP or QuICC topics to the Commonwealth Health Board. Thomas J. Martin and Rev. Lois D. Martin Annual Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship for an incoming MD1 student with first preference given to a student from Lycoming, Montour, Columbia or Clinton county. Second preference is given to a student from the counties currently identified as Geisinger Commonwealth’s northeastern and north central Pa region. Fidelity Deposit & Discount Bank Scholarship is available to students enrolled in the MD program with first preference given to students currently identified within the institution’s northeastern and north central Pennsylvania region. Second preference will be given to any Pennsylvania student. Friends of Geisinger Commonwealth Scholarship is an anonymous scholarship given to an incoming student enrolled in the MD program based on merit or demonstrated need as defined by the Office of Financial Aid. Geisinger Commonwealth Alumni Scholarship was originally established by the Charter Class of Geisinger Commonwealth. The award goes to a Geisinger Commonwealth student who exemplifies the mission of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine as demonstrated by a commitment to service and a community-minded spirit. Geisinger Commonwealth Student Scholarship is made possible by the contributions of the employees of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine and will help fund an MD1 student based on merit and/or need. This award will go to a student representing Geisinger Commonwealth’s northeastern and north central Pennsylvania region. InterMountain Medical Group Scholarship is awarded to a MD 3 student who has expressed an interest in primary care or a subspecialty that is underserved in northeastern Pennsylvania First preference will be given to students from any of the northeastern Pennsylvania counties (defined as Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, Pike Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming). John J. Menapace Scholarship is awarded to an incoming student enrolled in the MD program based on merit or demonstrated financial need. Northeastern Pennsylvania Health Care Foundation Scholarships are awarded to students who plan to return to their native counties of Lackawanna, Luzerne or Wyoming to practice medicine following their education and professional training. Two new NEPA Health Care Foundation Scholars are selected from each incoming class. Sarah Wright Memorial Annual Scholarship is a need based award that gives first preference to incoming MD students from any of the northeastern and north central Pennsylvania counties identified as Geisinger Commonwealth’s primary region with 2nd preference given to students from Pennsylvania. Sondra and Morey Myers, Esq. Scholarship is awarded to a student enrolled in the MD program that has traditionally been underrepresented in higher education, is high performing and has overcome great adversity. The student must demonstrate a commitment to community service and a desire to continuously seek and advance the creation of knowledge to improve the human condition. Stephen Poorman Annual Scholarship in honor of Dr. Randall Storm and Dr. Sanjay Doddamani was established to provide awards to students who are graduates of Lock Haven University or residents of Clinton County. Susquehanna Health Annual Scholarship is awarded to students who reside in Lycoming, Tioga, Clinton, Sullivan, Union, Northumberland, and Bradford counties. Established by Susquehanna Health, physicians, employees of Susquehanna Health, and members of the community have also contributed to this fund. Taylor Nursing and Rehabilitation (TNR) Center Scholarship of The Luzerne Foundation is awarded by the Board of Directors of the Taylor Long Term Care Center to benefit a Geisinger Commonwealth MD student who resides from the geographic area that the nursing facility has served, specifically: Avoca, Dupont, Duryea, Moosic, Old Forge and Taylor. Wayne Memorial Health Scholarship is awarded to a MD1 student who is a resident of Wayne or Pike Counties or from the greater Carbondale area of Lackawanna and Susquehanna Counties who demonstrates financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid. Wilkes Barre General Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship is awarded to a Geisinger Commonwealth student who is attending the South Campus in their third year and attended a high school within Luzerne County. Endowed Funds Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine Endowed Scholarshipis awarded to an incoming Doctor of Medicine (MD) student based on the student’s merit and/or demonstrated financial need. Jennifer A Sidari, M.D. ’13, Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in the memory of Dr. Jennifer Sidari who graduated from Geisinger Commonwealth’s Charter Class. This scholarship is awarded to an MD1 student from Lackawanna or Luzerne County who expresses an interest in community service and a desire to practice in northeastern Pennsylvania. Michael and Louise Altier Medical Endowed Scholarshipis awarded to students enrolled in the MD program at Geisinger Commonwealth with initial preference given to students from Lackawanna County. This award is based on merit or demonstrated financial need. Myer Alperin Family Medical Endowed Scholarshipis awarded to a student in the MD program selected based on merit or need.
